NORTHERN STORM - MATCH REPORTS
Senior Mens
Round 8 – against Sawtell
First Grade – report by Colin Scully
It was a great to be back from a
2 week break. The feeling in the dressing shed was positive and the lads were
here today to play top footy.
Prior to the commencement of the
match, the coaching staff stressed the importance of this match, in particular,
the need to dominate the match from the opening whistle and for the lads to
retain possession.
The first half was exhilarating
as the lads clearly outplayed Sawtell all over the park. Our defence was solid,
our passing was clinical and we created lots of opportunities. At the 19th minute of play Grant
Scully scored and it looked like we would run away with the game. However, 8
minutes later Sawtell levelled the score but it was Storm who continued to
attack but could not find the back of the net.
At half time the coaching staff
requested that the lads hold their positional play and continue to dominate
their opposition. The second half saw lots of missed opportunities. However
frustration was clearly evident as a number of poor refereeing decisions
resulted in our lads losing their cool. There was at least a 10 minute period
when we dropped our momentum. It must be said that the spectators attending
this match couldn’t believe that Storm were not awarded a number of penalties.
Unfortunately we can protest as much as we like but the score will not change.
The game ended in a draw and we lost a valuable 2 points.
I must say that there are a
number of positives arising from this match. First and foremost is that it
appears we are coming together as a team. Our defence is tighter and we are
creating many opportunities. We now only have to play smarter and retain our
composure rather than rushing, panicking and becoming frustrated in not scoring
at every opportunity. It is coming together lads and at the right time of the
season.
A good effort lads.
