Senior Mens

Round 10 – against Woolgoolga

First Grade – report by Colin Scully

A very frustrating game for players, coaching staff and spectators – I’m sure all would have believed that it was only a matter of time before Storm would score and then score again and again. Woopi fielded a very young and inexperienced side yet managed to stop Storm from scoring many goals.

It must be said that Storm squandered so many chances. We had an additional 5 opportunities in the first half and 7 in the second half. Full credit to the Woopi goalkeeper whose positional play was first class and who saved a number of goals.

Often it is difficult to play good football against a side that is struggling but this is what makes good teams successful. For most of the game our lack of control and retaining possession together with formation let us down but it is the finishing or lack of finishing that is the real difference this year. Why not just pass the ball around the keeper to one of the players who is not marked rather than trying to dribble around the whole defence????????

Good to see Mykel Watson scoring his first goals for the season – one in the 12th minute and a penalty in the 39th. Grant Scully scored in the 44th minute. Half time score was 3 nil. Woopi scored in the 3rd minute of the second half and there were no other goals scored. In the second half Woopi forced us to play the majority of the second half in about 20-30 metres of the pitch as their defence continued to move forward which caught so many of our players in off side positions.

The major positive is that we won this game as points are so important for us in the 2nd round if we are to qualify for the semis. Lots of training work to be done during the week lads.
